This Place
When you fly into Port Au Prince it is a surreal experience. The airport you walk next to is the skeletal remains from the earthquake. X's still cover the shattered windows. The over whelming poverty that you pass by and snap a photo of, is a constant reminder of why we are here. Rubbish burning in the neighborhoods as you drive to the clinic site just brings back a flood of memories. They are removing the garbage from the streets with crews dressed in jump suits. The rubble is considerably less than the last trip. Progress, Port Au Prince style is measured in how much has been removed and cleaned up from the last visit. There must be something to this place, because we all yearn to go back. Once Haiti gets "in your head" you tend to dream about it. What a person needs to survive is apparent to those trained in the medical field. It gets pretty basic, clean water, food and shelter top the list. We provide medical care, a luxury few people have had until now. It is reassuring to see the same families when we come back. They place their trust in us. This is the place that you can actually make a difference. The small things are not taken for granted. We fill the needs of the community with vitamins for the kids, basic antibiotics for the sick and medications to treat hypertension and diabetes that are needed. Here we CAN make a difference. We appreciate the support that you give us to provide care for this community. Thank you.
